"....He grew up on the farm of Nathan, his father, northwest of Salem, Indiana, and continued to make agriculture his business and his pride. He raised Poland China hogs, which he shipped to about every state in the Union. He also was interested in raising woolsheep. The Civil War changed his life. The conflict between peace-loving faith and love of country must have been very real to the Friends; so it must have been for Joshua G. too; however, he and his brother, Oliver Q., joined the Union army. Oliver Q. was killed, and Joshua G. served over three years in the Infantry, 53rd Indiana Volunteers. He participated in general Sherman's "March to the Sea," as well as in other critical battles.
Joshua m Elizabeth P. Baynes soon after the war, on 9-19-1866 at the Highland MH. They began their life together on a farm near Mt. Zion, Washington Co., but in February, 1869, they moved to the Trueblood homestead, Joshua's boyhood home, which became their permanent home. " pg 81
