The Trueblood Family In America

Notes taken from

"The Trueblood Family in America" by Bula Trueblood Watson, copyright 1964.

"....He was ten years old when he arrived with his parents in Washington County, Indiana, July 4, 1815. Joshua and his family lived for many years at their home in Oakey Woods, later called Highland. About 1858, he moved to Salem, where he practiced medicine.

. . . . Joshua Trueblood was a graduate of Physiomedical College of Cincinnati. He practiced from 1828 till 1858 near Highland Church. he is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem, where he died in 1879. He was a member of the Friends Church and prominant in its affairs. In later life, he was a firm believer in spiritualism, embracing that branch which was known as "The Emmanual Movement," which flourished from 1850 till 1880. His residence and office were located on the corner of Water and Mulberry Streets, in Salem. He was a man odf strong personality, and very pleasant, though positive, in his dealings with his patients. (Written by Lawrence W. Paynter in 'Medical History of Washington County.)

E. Hicks Trueblood wrote about Joshua Trueblood in an article that was circulated to Truebloods all over the United States about 1930.

The eighty acre "Oak Woods Farm" was bought by Dr. Joshua Trueblood. . . .Joshua gave one half acre of it for the Friends' Meeting House and for school purposes. When the doctor moved to Salem about 1854, the place went into the hands of Anderson Morris, later changed hands several times, and is now (1909) the home of Rev. A. L. Carney. The doctor's mind was not so much (while he was still at Oakey Woods) on plowing our oakland virgin soil as on searching the woods and fields for medical plants, barks, and roots. Of these he had a storehouse full. Some were made into syrups, some into tinctures, and some ground and bottled. He used these in his practice and that not used by him found a ready sale in Louisville by his purchaser, Dr. Lewis of that city.
