"....(the last survivor of the ten children). his receptive mind as he grew up in the Canton neighborhood, attended Dogwood School, listened to stories of runaway slaves and the stories of North Carolina from his mother and thers provided him the material for his writing in later life of those vivid memories which provided much pleasure to many when they were published in the Salem newspapers and historical periodicals. He is really the first Trueblood genealogist, and although he never was able to fulfill his dream of visiting his ancestors' state of Norht Carolina in person, he took the trip often in stories of the old timers in Indiana.
After his early education at the Dogwood School and the Blue River Academy, he taught school for several terms in Washington and Jackson counties. He then attended medical school and was graduated from the Cincinnati Physio-Medical College in 1855; practiced medicine for two years near Cincinnati and then engaged in the drug business in Philadelphia for another two years. Me m (1) Mary Bunting "on the 23rd of the 9th month, at Darby, Pa., according to the order of the Society of Friends." She was very fond of farm life; so E. Hicks gave up his practice of medicine and bought a farm in the northwest part of Washington Co., near the Highland Quaker Church. In those early days, he made a specialty of raising fruit, having a fine orchard of more than a 1000 trees, largely peach trees- -from which he gathered enormous crops, shipping the fruit to Lafayette and Chicago markets. The largest shipment at one time was twenty-seven hundred boxes.
After the death of Mary (Bunting) Trueblood, Dr. Trueblood m (2) on 10-10-1871, Anne Brooks.
On October 17, 1916, Anne (Brooks) Trueblood died. After that, E. Hicks sold his personal property and real estate and with his daughter, Gertrude, moved to Salem. After the m of Gertrude to Oliver M. Trueblood, he lived with them until his death on March 4, 1919.
E. Hicks Trueblood was a birthright Quaker and a life long member of the Society of Friends. For many years, he was clerk of the Highland MM and for an even longer period an Elder in the meeting. He also took an active interest in public affairs. perhaps he was more widely known because of his research in and writing on historical subjects than any other activity. his work on the Trueblood family is alone an accomplishment of unusual completeness. As a writer of Washington Co. history of the early days, he showed much ability. Due to his efforts, much of the early history of the county has been preserved as well as the history of the Friends' Church. Whatever worth this latest effort to tell the Trueblood story may have, much credit goes to E. Hicks Trueblood, the first genealogist of the family and the best. We, the Truebloods, salute you!
