Joshua used to take hay and straw to the Haymarket, London
, by horse and carriage. On the way home he would fall asl
eep, leaving the horse to make its own way home.
In 1871 he was a jobbing labourer but later in life he work
ed as a Grocer's assistant.
He owned several houses in St Albans, and lived in Bedfor
d Rd. He worked as a greengrocer at some time.
In 1874 he owned freehold houses in Bedford Rd, St Albans
From 1888 until 1906 he lived at 8 Bedford Rd
On March 15 1895 he made a codicil to his will to declare t
hat if any of his real or personal estate remained at the d
ecease of his wife Harriet Howard after paying all debts an
d funeral expenses the said remainder if not already inves
ted in freehold pro-law Herodius Drury Howard during her li
fetime and at her decease the principal shall be equally di
vided between her three sons 'viz' Alfred Glossop Howard an
d Walter Howard and Charles Edward Howard and he appointe
d his daughter-in-law Herodius Drury Howcease of my wife Ha
rriet Howard.
The will was signed by a cross and witnessed by Emily Blo
w of Bedford Rd, St Albans, and William Constable of Victor
y St. St Albans.

y 1901 he had his own Wood Merchant business. At this tim
e he was living at 43, Grange St, St Albans, with his wif
e and three of their children.

In 1901 he was described as a railway accountant, living a
t 37, St Paul's Rd, St Pancras, London.
