"...He was a self-taught physician in Salem, Ind., where he practiced from 1869 to 1895. Dr. Painter writes of him:
A Man of broad views, cultured, kind, and considerate. He was successful in his chosen profession, and possessed the full confidence and kindly esteem of all with whom he came in contact, professionally or socially. . . .
The doctor was a large robust man: dignified, but with a kindly smile for everyone. Wore a full, flowing beard.
He was reared in the Friends' Church and well grounded in the tenets of that faith. He was a soldier of the Civil War, and a member of the GAR.
